Job Description

Part-time, 20 hours per week

Monday-Friday, 1:30-5:30pm, August-June

Wheaton Bible Church is seeking a part-time Elementary Teacher for the after-school program of Puente del Pueblo who will serve the residents of Timber Lake Apartments at Wegner Elementary School. This position is responsible for building relationships with 15-20 elementary-age students, and for academic tutoring, life skills instruction, and teaching Christian education. The elementary teacher will facilitate group work with students involving experiential learning, as well as plan and implement community service activities, communicate with parents, and coach volunteers. The teacher is also responsible for maintaining Puente’s standard of classroom behavior during program time.

Responsibilities

Academic Oversight

  1. Facilitate learning in a class of up to 15-20 elementary age students in a daily after-school program; including homework completion, academic enrichment and skill building, and life skills.
  2. Assess and monitor student progress at regular intervals with AS coordinator.
  3. Develop and enforce standards for behavior management for your classroom in accordance with Puente’s behavior management plan.
  4. Initiate and maintain ongoing contact with parents of all participating students.  Communicate with parents about students’ successes and failures in behavior and academics.
  5. Support, encourage and resource the volunteer tutors working with your students so that they grow in effectiveness.
  6. Work with caseworkers to refer students whose families could benefit from additional services.
  7. Facilitate daily recreational activities (gym time) for students, with attention to behavior management and equipping volunteer gym helpers

Other Program Duties

  1. Supervise and monitor Northern Illinois Food Bank snack delivery and distribution in accordance with NIFB training.
  2. Contribute to the planning and implementation of two program-wide events each year (Christmas and Graduation Celebrations). 
  3. Participate in the planning and improvement process as needed, contributing feedback to improve program effectiveness.
  4. Complete all required paperwork.
  5. All other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s degree in education, youth ministry or a related field.
  2. Previous classroom teaching or group experience with adolescents.
  3. Passion for working with elementary-age students.
  4. Demonstrates personal interest in the academic progress and home life of students. 
  5. Sensitivity to the needs of students from low-income, high-risk families and culturally diverse background.
  6. Bilingual in English and Spanish or Arabic strongly preferred.
  7. Well-developed office-based computer skills.
  8. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  9. Strong interpersonal skills; team player.
  10. Proven initiative and resourcefulness.
  11. Proven record of outstanding organization and time management skills.
  12. Exhibits spiritual giftedness in administration, encouragement and helps.
  13. Willingness to commit to the end of the academic year (early June).
