Job Description

Shift: Part time, Days, every other weekend

20 hrs/ week


Reporting to the Production Manager/Executive Chef, prepares all patient and cafeteria meals. Prepares complete meals in large bulk quantities as well as individual servings utilizing commercial techniques of food preparation. Adheres to safety and sanitation regulations. 

1. Prepares large batch cafeteria meals and regular and modified patient meals following standardized recipes. Uses a variety of techniques in food preparation in accordance with commercial culinary standards and food and sanitary regulations. May be required to cook food requiring short preparation times, according to patient requirements. 

2. Follows recipes and/or product directions for preparing, seasoning, cooking, tasting, carving and serving of soups, meats, vegetables, desserts and other foodstuffs in large batches for consumption in a commercial setting or patient care setting. 

3. Prepares food by operating a variety of kitchen equipment. Measures ingredients, washes, peels, cuts and shreds fruits and vegetables, trims and cuts meat, poultry or fish for culinary use. Appropriately utilizes commercial grills, ovens, burners, broilers and other kitchen appliances in the preparation of food. 

4. Tastes products, reads menus, estimates food requirements, check production and keep records in order to accurately plan production requirements and appropriately requisition supplies and equipment. Utilizes ingredients and prepares food in an efficient manner to minimize preparation time and waste. 

5. Keeps equipment and workstations clean and sanitary. Handles food and utensils in a sanitary manner. Takes all necessary steps to eliminate contamination and adheres to all food and safety standards and hospital policies on sanitation and food handling. 
6. Adheres to HACCP policies and procedures. 

7. Adheres to hospital and departmental safety standards and sanitation regulations in order to maintain a safe patient care and working environment. 

8. Cooperates with co-workers in providing quality food service. Assists in orientation and training of new employees. 

9. Attends mandatory in-service education programs. 

10. Adheres to all Northwest Community Hospital standards, policies and procedures.

Job Requirements

1. One year prior professional experience in large batch cooking. 

2. Sanitation certification is preferred.

3. The interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with coworkers in a team environment. 

4. The analytical skills necessary to measure ingredients and determine appropriate quantities of food. 

5. The technical knowledge to operate commercial cooking appliances and prepare food according to recipes in a commercial kitchen.
