OVERALL PURPOSE/FUNCTION:

The Part-Time Graphic Designer will be an integral part of the small but dynamic Global Brand team within the Awana Executive Offices. Reporting to the VP of Global Brand, the graphic designer will be responsible for creating graphical elements that support the Awana brand for use in social media, presentations, videos, web, newsletters, etc.; conferring with the Executive office as well as various departments as need. This position is key to advancement of the Awana brand to both internal and external audiences.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1.    Works with VP of Global Brand to plan and implement a design strategy.
2.    Completes page layout and other design work for video, presentation, print and web publications.
3.    Creates illustrations and other visual artwork for use in print publications, slide presentations and on web.
4.    Designs page layout, selection of photography and illustrations and production of press-ready art and computer-generated output for assigned projects.
5.    Prepares art for illustrative purposes by using current and available computer applications, as well as traditional art media. Selects, scans, creates and/or modifies graphics, calligraphy, illustrations, photography or other artwork as determined desirable for completion of project.
6.    Duplicates digital and analog media by filling orders or sending to vendor.  Designs and prints face labels, disk jackets and other related video and information disk pieces Creates disk menu interfaces.
7.    Manages projects assigned.  Reviews project with VP of Global Brand and Executive Leadership team at various stages of completion and makes changes as necessary. Guides projects to completion within agreed-upon budget and time parameters.
8.    Finalizes projects, prepares and assembles artwork for printer or other outside vendor; approves proofs.
9.    Tracks and records time spent on work in progress and work completed.
10.  Interfaces with other designers in the ministry to critique work, brainstorm concepts, share ideas and stay abreast of available creative resources.
11.  Performs other related duties as may be required or assigned from time to time.

Job Requirements

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree (BA or BS) with a concentration in design or illustration from college or university; or two to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to relate to employees to determine needs; ability to respond to questions and present information in one-on-one and small group situations to employees or vendors.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to apply concepts of basic mathematics to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Other Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Must have a background in design/illustration and be proficient working with Mac and have a working knowledge of design applications such as Adobe Creative Suite. Must be creative and have a strong sense of design, composition, and color.  Interpersonal skills, excellent verbal communication skills, and project management skills are essential.  A good understanding of current printing processes and technology is desirable.  Familiarity with Awana programs and products is helpful.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

PRIMARY INTERFACES

Internal:  Reports to the Director of U.S. Training.  Frequent interaction with other Training department staff members.  Occasional interaction with other headquarters and field staff throughout the organization.

External:  Occasional contact with printers and other vendors.
